{"id":260,"date":"2025-05-09T09:42:32","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T16:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/simpkins.social\/cliff\/?p=260"},"modified":"2025-05-09T09:57:31","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T16:57:31","slug":"fixing-windows-hello-not-starting-dell-webcam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simpkins.social\/cliff\/blog\/2025\/05\/09\/fixing-windows-hello-not-starting-dell-webcam\/","title":{"rendered":"Fixing Windows Hello not starting Dell webcam"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I spent the last couple of days troubleshooting an issue with Windows Hello and I&#8217;m documenting it here in case it helps others or my future self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>My Problem<\/em><\/strong>: My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dell.com\/en-us\/shop\/dell-ultrasharp-webcam-wb7022-4k-uhd\/apd\/319-bbhp\/pc-accessories\">Dell WB7022 4k UHD camera<\/a> (great camera, btw) failed to start with Windows Hello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The camera worked 100% fine as a camera in Zoom, Teams, Camera app, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The camera did not work with Windows Hello\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When Windows 11 started, the camera errored out and required PIN to log in<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At Camera setup (Settings &gt; Accounts &gt; Sign-in options &gt; Facial recognition), it threw the &#8216;Sorry, something went wrong. Couldn&#8217;t turn on the camera. Per the <a href=\"https:\/\/dl.dell.com\/content\/manual28989146-dell-ultrasharp-webcam-wb7022-user-guide.pdf?language=en-us\">camera&#8217;s user guide documentation<\/a>, the camera uses a USB 3.1 Gen 1 USB cable (screenshot below). <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"414\" height=\"91\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/simpkins.social\/cliff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image.png?resize=414%2C91&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Screenshot from webcam docs - USB cable is USB 3.1 Gen 1\" class=\"wp-image-262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/simpkins.social\/cliff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image.png?w=414&amp;ssl=1 414w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/simpkins.social\/cliff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image.png?resize=300%2C66&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>For the camera to work with Windows Hello, this particular camera needs to be plugged into a USB 3.1 or 3.2 Gen 1 port (USB-A) &#8211; it does not work in a Gen 2 port (USB-C), nor does it work in a USB 2.0 port. In my case, I plugged it into a USB 2.0 port. Once plugged into my USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, everything worked again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So&#8230;if your external [Windows Hello capable] webcam isn&#8217;t working and the standard Windows Hello troubleshooting steps have failed you, check your cabling\/port requirements. ^_^<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Public Service Announcement <\/em><\/strong>&#8211; If you don&#8217;t already do have one, you should create a document with your USB ports so that you can remember which ones do what. Below is a screenshot of my one-pager &#8211; listing which USB ports are 2.0, which are 3.2, and which ones have Smart Power On capability (for keyboards and mice). And I formatted it to make it more skimmable.
